A Return Home: A Dream Realized
My family can trace its roots from Ireland to Staten Island to Brooklyn, and from Ireland to Manhattan to Brooklyn and eventually to the suburbs of Long Island. A genealogical search shows that both sides of the family resided at one time or another in Manhattan, some in west 30's.
|
|
|
|
|
|
A great grandfather was a pilot in New York Harbor. My mother had to move because of the construction of the Holland Tunnel.
As the child of (Long Island) suburban settlers, there was an embedded memory of dreams of living in luxury in an exclusive neighborhood in Manhattan.
High school, college, and grad school in New York City required familiarity with rapid transit and the main reading room of the NY Public Library. All those experiences were preamble to the opportunity for an academic position in the suburbs of Philadelphia, a much more subdued city.
In the next thirty years, I built a career as a faculty member, experienced sailboat owner, traveled domestically and overseas. The second experience in the middle of the pine barrens of New Jersey convinced me that trees, lovely and useful, are not my favorite neighbor.
One Spring Monday in 2001, my office mate announced she had purchased a timeshare in Manhattan. Somewhat incredulously, I peppered her with questions, secured contact information, searched the web, made an appointment with the sales office and secured a flex junior suite.
It was not long before I realized that my ownership was insufficient and addictive. If you have one, you want more. Now with three units, one of every size and multiple weekends, I have absorbed Manhattan free of academic responsibilities, sat next to Pierce Brosnan and his wife, debated theories of art with the wife of a former Israeli Prime Minister, chatted with the late Senator Fred Thompson (he was alive then), frequently attempted to recharge my life with the light from Times Square, eaten cronuts, and had more “New York Moments” of stimulating conversations with strangers than you can count. At those times, I fully live in Manhattan.
All of this is possible because of the location and luxury of The Manhattan Club. When I spend time there with the gracious, impeccably polite, helpful staff who have become friends, when I gaze over the skyline from the lounge, when I ride a BMT (oops, Q R W) train, when I stare at the New York Harbor, I realize I am living the dream of my forebears because, as the sign of the then sales office said, “The Manhattan Club is your home in Manhattan.” I have returned to my beginnings.

We are proud to provide you with testimonials from your fellow Manhattan Club members that have recently stayed at the Club:
“I have been an Owner since about 2004 and have never had a problem or concern that made me feel dissatisfied. I received a special warm return greeting from Valet Anthony.@nbsp; Two ladies and a gentleman from housekeeping were always very pleasant and cordial.”
November 2024
“Our housekeeper service was excellent- but I did not get her name.@nbsp; I cannot say enough good about Jerry at the reception area.@nbsp; It is so wonderful to see him, and he gives me that feeling that he genuinely cares about each guest.”
November 2024
“Thanks again for assisting us for this great stay! All of staff at front desk, all of penthouse reservation managers who helped us organize a four day stay at Thanksgiving.”
November 2024
“From the moment we stepped foot in the front door, we were welcomed by Security, Front Desk, and the bellman team. Great start. The room was not ready when we arrived, which was understandable as it was a holiday weekend, but they offered complimentary coffee and apples in the afternoon on a cold November day which was very nice. Once we checked in, the suite we were assigned to was lovely. We prefer the interior rooms as these are much quieter as to not here the NYC street noise. The housekeeper who we had was very kind and helped us make our bed every morning. Thank you to all who made this stay exceptional. Happy Holidays.
November 2024
“WOW! We have been Owners for many years now and the decor and staff all deserve a 'WOW!” It was extraordinary this year. Staff members encountered during stay:@nbsp; Rachael - Receptionist friendly, efficient, concise, and friendly responses to questions.@nbsp; Bell man - morning of the 19th - no name obtained broke a bill into smaller denominations.@nbsp; Breakfast staff encountered on the 19th were the opposite of the NYC stereotypes sometimes encountered - made us wish we could stay longer. Greeted by a member of housekeeping met in the hall!”

The MET Museum – New Exhibits
The MET’s upcoming exhibits offer a journey through history and artistic innovation:
-
Caspar David Friedrich: The Soul of Nature - Step into the world of German Romanticism with the stunning works of Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840). Known for revolutionizing European landscape painting, Friedrich’s art invites viewers into a profound spiritual connection with nature. His landscapes—meditative, mysterious, and full of wonder—depict nature not just as a setting, but as a backdrop for emotional and personal encounters. As one of the most significant figures in the German Romantic movement, Friedrich’s work emphasizes the deep bond between the inner self and the natural world, offering an intimate and complex exploration of our responses to nature that still resonates today.
-
Recasting the Past: The Art of Chinese Bronzes, 1100–1900 - The art of Chinese bronzes from the 12th to the 19th century is an extraordinary yet often overlooked chapter in the story of Chinese art. Bronze vessels, once symbols of ritual and power in ancient China, were rediscovered during this period as icons of a golden age. This exhibit highlights the rich history and artistic craftsmanship of these remarkable artifacts. From ritual use to their role in reconnecting with a revered past, these bronzes are a testament to the enduring cultural significance of China’s ancient art.
Don’t miss out on these cultural treasures. For more information and to book tickets, please visit https://www.metmuseum.org/

From well-worn house dresses to psychedelic micro minis, from modern suits to fast-food workers' uniforms, each garment tells a unique story. These pieces reveal the lives of the women who wore them, the context of their time, and the cultural trends that shaped them. These are the pieces that rarely make it into cultural archives—each a symbol of women's resilience, resourcefulness, and evolving identities.
